The products pictured here include some of the bent wood Shaker style boxes and carriers we love to make. They were first used by the celibate religious order called "The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing" that lived and worked in communes from Maine to Kentucky. They were later known as Shakers because of the shaking that was evident in their worship services. Many items we take for granted today such as the flat broom, clothespins, washing machine, circular saw and the packaged seed industry were invented by the Shakers.

All items were invented because of function rather than decoration. Although today functionality is secondary, the simplistic design makes these pieces very appealing to use as a compliment to any décor. The simple hand cut fingers of the oval boxes and carriers combined with the shape and Danish oil finish allow them to fit equally well in most homes.

There is nothing like the rich warmth of natural wood. While most items are made of Cherry we like to use Walnut, Maple and some Pine. Figured Maple is especially beautiful when used to make the oval shaped boxes and carriers as well as furniture. The wood is finished with hand applied Danish oil that brings out the rich color of each specie. This process allows the woods to age naturally attaining a natural deep rich color. Cherry wood is especially prized for the richness of color it develops over time.

The Shaker craftsmen were perfectionists and their work highly regarded. However, because of their celibate practices, and as the Industrial Revolution took hold, their numbers declined to only a handful. They no longer make things to sell to the public. By reproducing their designs we hope to increase the appreciation for their work and provide a piece of American history. We are pleased to respond to your inquiries and will accept custom orders.
